The Bloody Legends & The Mendenhall Experiment with Brandon Mendenhall

Friday Apr 26, 2024
In this edition of The Bloody Legends Jim and I caught up with Brandon Mendenhall of The Mendenhall Experiment for a very inspiring chat about the forthcoming single "Say It", battling cerebral palsy to learn guitar, the documentary "Mind Over Matter", and all things The Mendenhall Experiment.
Mendenhall talks about the single, "'Say It' was a different process for us, the song came together organically as a full band, with everyone throwing in their flavor on the fly. It was one of those 'magic moments' as a band where everything just flowed out of us and the song came together in an evening. It stands as one of our heaviest songs in the catalogue.” Vocalist Alyce Hayes adds, "'Say It' is a song about speaking your truth, even when you're scared, or when you feel unheard. It's a personal mantra and reminder for myself, really. We can't fully become who we're meant to be until we can speak for ourselves. When the guys sent me the music, I was immediately inspired. I think I had the lyrics written in about 30 minutes. 'Say It' is asking the question: 'What if I don't stay silent? What if my words have power?' Because they do. Words absolutely have power." The Mendenhall Experiment was born as Brandon's own personal aspiration to be in a world-famous band while working within the limitations of Cerebral Palsy, knowing full well that the cards were stacked against finding musicians willing to work with him. Possessing a fierce desire to succeed, Brandon went to visit a friend in the Rock & Roll Mecca of Los Angeles- and never left, pursuing his dream with relentless tenacity and bulldog determination. Failure was not an option. Formed in 2008, The Mendenhall Experiment also features bass player Nathan Stockton, who overcame a disability of his own-childhood deafness-through the power of music. He and Brandon are joined by Alyce Hayes on vocals, Mike Lira on guitar, and Justin Lubeck on drums. Based in Southern California, TMX has been regularly performing on the infamous Sunset Strip in addition to gigs throughout the region opening for the likes of such metal mainstays as John 5, POD, Alien Ant Farm, Kill Devil Hill, Fear Factory, Prong, Flaw, Metal Allegiance, Smile Empty Soul, Cold, and more. In 2013, the five-piece performed at the Monster Energy Aftershock Festival in Sacramento, California, sharing the stage with Korn, Megadeth, and Five Finger Death Punch. A breakthrough occurred on June 17, 2014, when TMX made it to the final round of The Battle of the Bands for Warped Tour. After an electrifying performance that left the audience screaming for more, The Mendenhall Experiment took second place. The subsequent buzz reached the discerning ears at Liquid Bit Music Productions and in August 2014 TMX inked a publishing deal with the company, six years to the day after the initial incarnation of The Mendenhall Experiment performed its first show in Brandon's hometown of Kankakee, Illinois. Shortly thereafter, the quintet put pen to paper again to sign their first development deal with Lucent Records, including national digital distribution through Universal Music Group.

Friday Apr 12, 2024
Priest is currently finishing up on tour in the US with Julien K and September Mourning, while also gearing up for the release of their latest Synthwave epic in Dark Pulse which is due out May 31st via Label Blue Nine. I recently caught up with Mercury to talk about the latest singles "Just A Game" & "Burning Love", all things Priest, and the latest album Dark Pulse. Dark Pulse is Priest’s fourth studio album and is produced by Simon Söderberg (ex-Ghost). It’s a dark synth-pop album with rave elements and heavy industrial notes. Heavily inspired by cyberpunk and goth culture, it dives into the dark and seductive nightlife that can be found specifically in Berlin. Dark Pulse explores themes like alcohol addiction, surviving narcissism, forbidden love, etc. connected to a past flamboyant lifestyle that just won't let go. With a signature blend of eerie synthesizers and pulsating hardware, Priest delves deeper into the shadows of dystopia and human-machine symbiosis.Get ready for an electronic dance record with poisoned roots, catapulting you into feverish insanity and back! Priest is a synth band that creates music rooted in the vastness of electronic dreams. The goal of their multifaceted prophecy is to safely guide humanity to the next evolutionary step – the merging with machines. The occult techno-pop act from Sweden, containing ex-members from Ghost, will throw you into the neon lights of 80 ́s sci-fi mixed with gothic soundscapes. With several praised global tours and critically acclaimed releases like New Flesh and Body Machine, they’ve successfully generated an ever-growing fanbase worldwide. Priest has toured with bands like Nitzer Ebb, Die Krupps, Combichrist, Deathstars, and Front Line Assembly among others. Jai That Aussie Metal Guy & Forgotten Shrine
Wednesday Apr 10, 2024
Wednesday Apr 10, 2024
Folk metal ensemble Forgotten Shrine, comprised of Josh Alexander and Sofia Frasz (EXILED HOPE), have unveiled their first single "Where Shadows Lie" and I caught up with them to talk all about it and all things Forgotten Shrine. "'Where Shadows Lie' is about facing the forces of darkness head-on, even though it seems like the world is falling apart, and all of our heroes aren't who we had thought they were." Josh explains. He continues, "I wrote the main hook of 'Where Shadows Lie' when I was a teenager, and have played it on various instruments since then. It wasn't until the end of 2022 that I really started getting into music production and started working on WSL. At that time Amazon's Rings of Power was releasing, and I felt very passionate about the lack of a faithful adaptation the show was. I stopped working on it for a long time after the final episode released, and the end credit song coincidentally shared the title of the song I had already written and started recording." Jai That Aussie Metal Guy Interviews Shred Rogers
Friday Apr 05, 2024
Friday Apr 05, 2024
I recently caught up with Shred Rogers who delivers a fast, fun, and family-friendly form of heavy metal and doing his best to put positivity into his music, with tracks like "I'm A Nut" "Baa Baa Black Sheep" & "Wheels On The Bus" this is a metal album you can enjoy with the junior metal heads in the family. We talked about his work with A Dark Halo and All Things Shred Rogers and the debut album "The Circle" which was released today.
About SHRED ROGERS: Based out of Three Rivers, MI, SHRED ROGERS emerged as an idea when Christopher began to foster and subsequently adopt his three children. Christopher has been a musician most of his life playing heavy metal of various types, with his most successful endeavor to date being co-founding A DARK HALO with Dave Lowmiller around 2004. When A DARK HALO was on hiatus from 2006 to around 2018, Christopher sought to write new heavy music. This time, creating something fun and family-friendly, but retaining the heaviness of music he loves and is inspired by. 2016 saw the release of the demo “Wheels On The Bus” under the moniker DADDY DEATH METAL and to date this demo video has racked up 56K views. 2018 brought the return of A DARK HALO and Christopher constructed his own home recording studio. Deciding to take his solo project further, it was rebranded as SHRED ROGERS with a focus on producing family-friendly metal across multi-media forms including music, video content, and comic books. Musically, SHRED ROGERS draws influence from the likes of METALLICA, DEVIN TOWNSEND, DIMMU BORGIR, and DREAM THEATER.
"To Achieve your Dreams, Wear your Heart on your Sleeve, Do your Best and Be Brave…The SHRED ROGERS Way!"
